Class > Slab building

Slab building is one of the hand building techniques that allows you make larger free form pieces. To create a curved form plate, for example, you can use the clay that is still soft and pilable. However, it has to be supported by the other materials to form the shape as it dries. To create angular and shaper edge pot, you can use hard slabs.

To start making basic slabs, roll out the ball of clay with a rolling pin between two wooden guides of the same thickness. Cut the slab pieces into the shape that you want. It is best to prepare the form on a paper first. And let it dry to the stage of self support. Use a comb or sharp pin to scratch the edge or areas that are to be joined with other parts. Add slips onto the joining parts and firmly press the two parts together. You may add a think coil of the same clay and press down along the joint of the slabs. Finished sample.
