Throwing a Cylinder
The very first form that all potters started is the cylinder. Once you master cylinder form through practices, you will adopt the same technique to create other circular forms such as bowls, plates, vases, and sake bottles.

Push the fingers down into the centered mass of clay. Be careful to leave thick enough clay base for the foot ring of the pot. Lift the roll of clay between your fingers to raise the wall of the cylinder.

Always remain a supporting hand to wrap around the clay to avoid distortion of the cylinder as the wheel spins.

Position your knuckle slightly lower than the fingers inside the pot and squeeze the clay upward in a smooth motion. Repeat the lifting process and make sure that the wall is of an even thickness. When finished, use a wire to cut the base of the pot off the wheelhead.
